Marion J. Wells Carthrae was born on July 29, 1924 on the Wells family ranch in
rural Barber County. She lived a “wonderful” life devoted to God and her family until
her death on September 27, 2007. She was the eldest of Vernon and Florence (Mills)
Wells’ daughters. She grew up on the Wells Ranch and attended grade school at the
one-room Aetna School. She then attended high school in Wilmore, Kansas, where
she graduated as salutatorian with the class of 1942. It was during high school that
Marion first met her future husband, Glenn Stewart Carthrae, the brother of her
friend, Helen. After working as a “Rosie the Riviter” for Boeing in Wichita for a year,
Marion was reunited with Stewart by the arranging of his sisters, Helen and
Ernestine. She later said, “That was it…the rest is history,” about their meeting and
their future relationship. The couple married August 12, 1943, just as Stewart was
about to be inducted into the U.S. Army. They spent two long years apart while
Stewart was stationed in the South Pacific. This time away from one another only
strengthened their bond.
Into their marriage four daughters were born, Glenda, Terry, Rita and Kathryn. They
also had a son, Dennis Eric, who died at birth. Marion and Stewart gave their
children a loving and care-free childhood on the family ranch. They also gave to their
children and many generations to come, the embodiment of a perfect marriage with
undying love for one another. Throughout her life, Marion exemplified love, truth and
selflessness. She always had a ready spirit and a willing hand at a moment’s notice,
from sewing all day to welcoming her grandchildren home from school with
homemade cookies. She cherished each and every family member, young and old.
Marion was the heart of her large extended family. Her life and her love will never be
forgotten. “And now abide faith, hope and love, these three; but the greatest of
these is love.”
Marion’s parents, Vernon and Florence, as well as her loving husband, Stewart and
son, Dennis preceded her in going Home.
She is survived by her three sisters and their husbands, Elaine and Lee Hoge of
Wichita, Kansas, Anne and Maynard Robertson of Rago, Kansas, Ellen and Harry
Circle of Ozark, Alabama; four daughters and their husbands, Glenda and Ron Sibley
of Pratt, Kansas, Terry and Richard Stephens of Wichita, Kansas, Rita and Russel
Graves of Castle Rock, Colorado, Kathryn and Bud Winters of Hardtner, Kansas;
foster sons, Hal and Frank Ecksten; thirteen grandchildren and soon to be, eighteen
great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Southwind Hospice through the funeral home.
There will be no viewing. The book will be available at the funeral home to sign on
