So sorry to hear about your Dad. (A lot of good daddies have been lost recently.) I loved your Dad! He was
one of my favorite teachers. He was never afraid to discipline the children of school board members. That
always made big points with me. Those kids were always the worst!

Comments = The grin!!  That's what I'll remember for sure.  Always looked like he was up to something!!  
Also, I had the hiccups one time in class, & he said a sure-fire way to get rid of them was to go to the front
of the room in front of everyone . . . "now hiccup for me," he said.  If I recall, he was right; no more
hiccups!  He will be missed...
Alva-Funeral service for James “Jim” Edward Fanning, age 80, will be Tuesday,
December 18, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Cherokee with
Municipal Cemetery, with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of
Cherokee. Visitation will Monday from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. and Tuesday from 9:
00 until 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home and after the service at the church.  

Jim was born on November 29, 1927 in Los Angeles, California to James J. Fanning
and Mary Catherine Edwards Fanning and passed from this life on December 14,
2007 at Beadles Nursing Home in Alva.  He received a BS degree from NWOSU in
Alva.  Jim also served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.  He was a classroom
teacher, as well as being a farmer and a cattleman.  He lived in the Cherokee and
Alva area all of his life.   Jim and Gussie J. Berry were married at the Alva Church
of God by Pastor Bob Brown.  He was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Cherokee, the Lions Club, the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #307 and the
Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association.  Jim enjoyed woodworking, golf, bowling,
tennis, baseball, snooker, roping and working cattle and most of all spending time
with grandchildren.  

Jim is survived by his wife, Gussie of Alva; five children, Kelly Hellar and husband,
Tony, Jay Fanning, Janet Wanger and husband, Max, Bonita Stewart and husband,
Russell, Debbie Coon and husband, Ken; Stepfather, Virgil Seiven; fifteen
grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Mary Lou Fanning.

Memorials may be given to the Cherokee High School Track or the NWOSU Girls
