KIOWA-Benny Mitchell Rathgeber, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2007 at Kiowa District
Hospital. Graveside service will be Friday, November 9, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at Riverview Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas.
Ben was born on April 24, 1925 at Guymon, Oklahoma to George and Gladys Quertermous
Rathgeber. He attended the Kiowa schools and graduated with the class of 1944. He served in the
United States Navy on board the USS Steamer Bay from 1943–1945. On August 21, 1945 he and
Virginia Miller were united in marriage and to that union two children were born. He worked as a
mechanic for 42 years in Kiowa at Olhson, Clabough, Coontz and Shoson retiring in 1987. When he
was not working as a mechanic he was in his woodshop creating a piece of furniture for family and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers; Kenneth and Roy “Nick” Rathgeber.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Kiowa, two sons; David and wife, Theresa of Kiowa, Jerry and
wife, Brenda of Woodward, Oklahoma, three grandchildren; Josh Rathgeber and fiancee’, Dedra
Moore of Coates, Natasha Crites and husband, Kenneth, Tyler Rathgeber, and one great grandchild;
Abie Crites all of Woodward, Oklahoma, one brother; Dick Rathgeber of Kiowa, one step brother;
Larry Frieden and wife, Millie of Hazelton, one step sister; Betty Wiley of Kiowa, and numerous other
relatives.
At Ben’s request there will be no public viewing. The funeral home will be open on Thursday,
November 8, 2007 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. to sign the book.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to be made to Kiowa District Hospital or Kiowa
Ambulance Service through the funeral home.
