| Cherokee-Funeral service for Leroy Clark Stein, age 79, will be on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. with Dr. Ron Hansen, Rev. Tom Cooksey and LaRoi Woods officiating. Burial will be at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee. Viewing will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home and after the service at the church. Leroy Clark Stein was born on November 4, 1928 to Peter Stein and Mabel Ollie (Sapp) Stein on the family homestead east of Cherokee in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma and died on December 15, 2007 at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid following a brief illness. Leroy was the youngest of six children born to his mother and the youngest of twelve children born to his father. Those within his immediate family include older brothers, Linley Morton, Lewis and C.A. “Pete” Stein; older sisters, Ruth Eloise (Stein) Dillon and Helen Maxine Stein, who died in infancy, and another older brother, Don R. Stein. Leroy attended Cherokee Public Schools, where he met Rosevelyn Edith Peterson while attending high school. He graduated in 1946 and thereafter attended Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater. Leroy and Rosevelyn were later married on May 7, 1949 in Cherokee. To this union were born four children who survive him: Peter Lynn Stein and wife, Lea Ann of Houston, Missouri (and their sons, Peter Dillon and Jason Lee); Rachel Ann (Stein) Hager and husband, Doyce of Cherokee (and their children, Amy Machelle, Jacob Daniel, and Haylee Dawn); Daniel Ray Stein and wife, Jana of Stillwater (and their children Danny Lynn and Jennifer Renae); and Samuel Lee Stein and wife, Kelly of Cherokee (and their children, Patrick Leroy and Kelsy Lee). Leroy farmed and raised cattle most of his adult life, both with his brother, Don through their Stein Brothers farming partnership; as well as with other family members in the Stein Angus Farm cattle partnership, a purebred Angus seed stock operation. Leroy was also active with Rosevelyn in owning and operating for many years Cole’s Flowers and Greenhouse, a nursery and retail flower shop in Cherokee. Leroy’s talents in carpentry, shop crafts and “odd jobs” were often put to use at “the Flower Shop” to complement the creative design skill of other family members who continue to work there today. Leroy loved and enjoyed his work and his family. He was active in the First Christian Church in Cherokee where he served as both deacon and elder and taught Sunday School youth classes for several years. He involved himself with whatever interested his children and grandchildren as they were growing up. He sponsored band trips and out-of-town speech and debate tournaments, served as an Assistant Scoutmaster to the local Boy Scout troop and helped with 4-H and FFA livestock projects. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing on occasion and would follow his grandchildren with enthusiasm as they engaged in school sports activities over the years. Although Leroy was forced to retire in 2005 due to health reasons, he attempted to remain active at home, at the Flower Shop and in the varied activities of his children and grandchildren. He relocated to Cherokee Memorial Manor in October 2006 and quickly formed many lasting friendships with fellow residents, staff members and their families. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Rosevelyn of Cherokee; his children and their spouses; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Memorials may be given to Cimarron Council Boy Scouts of America, Troup #335 through the funeral home. |
