To Richard and Kathy, whom I remember dearly, from the time I lived on South 4'th St. as a 10 year old, how wonderful were your mama's tamales, and your friendships. I have talked about them ever since. Richard and I went through school together until I got married and left town. Kathy may remember us staying all night together often. You and your family are very good memories I have of Kiowa. God Bless all of you as your Mom and Dad are together again. Love and Prayers...... Louise (Drew)Parks |
| Grandma’s Life Story Gertrude Moreno Jaso was born November 15, 1915 to Silvester and Concepcion Moreno in Jalisco, Mexico. Seven children were born to this union: Ruperto, Tomas, Maria, Francis, Benita and Ruth. Gerturde came to the United States as a young child and attended school in Junction City, Kansas. She returned to Mexico for a period of time. During that time her father passed on. The family then returned to the United States and lived in San Antonio, Texas. During a visit to Kansas she met Joseph Jaso. After her return to San Antonio, she and Joe continued their relationship through correspondence. On January 25, 1936 they were united in marriage. They made their home in Kiowa, Kansas. To this union five children were born: Richard, Kathy, Dolores, Danny and Bobby. In the early years of her marriage, she was a homemaker. In her later years she worked at various places; some of which were the local laundry mat, local restaurants, the school, the hospital and the post office. She devoted her life to the care of her family. She was also a devoted grandmother to all of her grandchildren. After the children had grown and left home, she traveled with her husband to various cities to watch Major League baseball games. This demonstrated her deep love for her husband. In February 1987 her husband Joe passed away after battling cancer for eight years. During this time she made his life her number one priority by giving him special loving care. Gertrude continued to live in Kiowa after losing her husband. She retired in 1990 at the age of 75. In her retirement years she enjoyed cooking, baking, spending time with family and friends and making her traditional homemade tamales at Christmas. She made numerous trips with her sister-in-law, Chole to go shopping, and she had many good times visiting with her neighbors, Fern Anderson and Cleone Kearns. She enjoyed listening to the radio in her early years. When she got a TV, she had her favorite shows she enjoyed. She was always there for her children, whether it was for a school activity, an illness, sporting events or just to go visit. In 2001 due to failing health, she moved to the Kiowa Hospital District Manor. She liked participating in bingo, getting her nails done and listening to the entertainment. In February 2007 her health started declining. January 14, 2008 she was admitted to Kiowa District Hospital where she stayed until she went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, February 21, 2008. |
