Comments = What a special lady we have just lost!! She was a TRUE friend to me.  I remember right
after Gary died she was at my house at 8:00 promptly eache morning to see that I got my day started.
We talked, prayed. laughed, cried, whatever I needed to do that day.  She stayed bot an hou.  Then she
would call be that night.  She did this for about 3 months or until I moved and started my job.  You will
never know what that meant and still means to me.  Love!  Jo Ann
Dorothy D. Leslie, 87, of Cherokee, Oklahoma, passed away early Sunday morning,
May 18, 2008, at Greenbrier Nursing Home in Enid after a period of failing health.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at First Christian Church in
Cherokee with Dr. Ron Hansen officiating.  Burial will be at Cherokee Municipal
Cemetery with Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee in charge of the
arrangements.
Dorothy Dell Scheer was born November 9, 1920, in Carrollton, Ohio, to Clarence
Robert and Agnes Elizabeth French Scheer, the eighth  of  nine children. In 1933,
she moved with her family to Oklahoma, where she attended and was graduated
from Centralia High School in 1938.
After high school graduation, Dorothy attended Draughon School of Business and
worked in Tulsa at Hillcrest Hospital, Atlas Electric, and Barnsdall Oil Company.
Moving to Enid in 1947, she enrolled at Phillips University and then worked as a
secretary for attorney Will Wright until her marriage to Wilber J. Leslie on April 3,
1948 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. Wilber and Dorothy lived in Ingersoll and in Cherokee.
During their marriage, Dorothy continued to work as a bookkeeper for Wilber’s
business, Leslie Repair Shop.  Later she kept books at the Cherokee Mill, served
as Cherokee City Clerk, and volunteered at Alfalfa County Hospital and the
Cherokee Chamber of Commerce.  For several years, she served as a voting
inspector during elections.
Although her stay at Phillips was short and Dorothy did not complete her degree in
Christian Education, throughout her life she read the Bible and numerous books
and articles on Christian topics.  Dorothy was very active in Christian Women’s
Fellowship, serving that organization in numerous offices, including president.
She was also a group leader, and, until shortly before her death, served as
treasurer.  Dorothy also served her church as Vacation Bible School director and
keeper of membership records.
In recent years, Dorothy enjoyed weekly meetings of her Tuesday Morning Bible
Study, reading, working crossword puzzles, playing Mexican dominoes and free
cell, and visiting with family and friends on the telephone.
Always a record keeper, Dorothy was a source of “what happened when,” for
church records, family history and genealogy, and community activities.
Wilber preceded her in death on April 15, 1992.  Her parents, six brothers, a sister,
a niece, and two great-nephews also preceded her in death.  Dorothy is survived
by a son, James Leslie and his wife, Nancy, of Enid; two daughters, Louise Leslie,
Wellington, Kansas, and Virginia Summers and her husband, Mike, of Tulsa; four
grandchildren, Leslie Summers and Sean Summers, both of Norman, Brett
Summers of Tulsa, and Christine Leslie, of Enid.  Also surviving her are one sister,
Lena Alice Daniel, of Vinita, and numerous nieces and nephews.
