Howard was born on October 27, 1923 in Cherokee to Floyd O. and Ethel Gray Parr and died in Enid on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at age 85. With the exception of college days and military service, Howard was a life-long resident of Amorita, where he farmed with his brother, Jack until his death. He graduated from Amorita High School in 1940 and then attended Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma A & M before serving two years in the army at the close of WWII. He was part of the Occupation Army in Germany. After his discharge, he went back to school and graduated from Northwestern State Teachers College at Alva in 1948. He lettered in basketball at OBU and NWSTC. Howard began his teaching career at Amorita High School in 1948, teaching there until the high school consolidated in 1957. He then taught at Hazelton, Kansas until 1962 at which time he entered the Burlington School System and taught there until his retirement in 1988. Howard taught mostly high school business classes, but he also taught some science classes and 7th and 8th grade classes. He coached extensively. He was Alfalfa County Teacher of the Year in 1972. He attended his last Alfalfa County Retired Teacher’s meeting in November. Howard was a member of First Baptist Church in Cherokee, where he served as Sunday School Teacher, the church treasurer, and as a deacon since 1981. He loved his Lord and his church family. Howard married Juanita Ruth Houghtelin on August 11, 1947 at First Baptist Church in Cherokee. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family cruise to Cancun, Mexico. They celebrated their 60th anniversary by attending their granddaughter’s wedding at First Baptist Church in Cherokee. This past summer, Howard and Juanita celebrated their 61st anniversary by taking all of their children and most of their grandchildren on an Alaskan cruise. Obviously, family – especially grandchildren – kept Granddad Parr going as long as he did. Howard is survived by his wife, Nita, a farm wife in every sense of the word. Also surviving are his children, Bob Parr and wife, Connie of Nash, Harold Parr and wife, Suzanne of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Hoadley and husband, Ken of Flint, Michigan, Janette Payne and husband, Bobby of Kearney, Nebraska; one brother, Jack Parr and wife, Carol of Cherokee; grandchildren, Abby Fleming and husband, Aaron, Eric Parr and wife, Michelle, Cliff Phillips, Travis Parr and wife, Cindy, Tyler Parr, Steph Rasmussen and husband, Spencer, Greg Payne and wife, Brande, Kimberly Anderson and husband, Nathaniel; great grandchildren, Collin Condit and Cale Parr; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
