KIOWA- Maxine (Brady) Pederson went to be with her beloved Lord and Savior October
19, 2008. She was born to Ralph and Myrtle Brady April 28, 1918, east of Alva in the
Ashley community.  She started school at Short Springs and graduated from the eighth
grade in 1930. She attended Alva High School, graduating in 1934. She was a student at
Northwestern College until the spring of 1938 when she received her Bachelor of
Science degree.  Her teaching career began that fall at Elm Dale District #52, Woods
County. She taught at several other schools, including Short Springs #42, (her home
school), Franklin District, #104, Horace Mann, and Greenleaf. In 1956, Maxine began
teaching at Amorita in Alfalfa County. Then, in 1957, she transferred to Burlington
Schools for a twenty-three year tenure. She retired in 1980, after teaching 32 years,
only missing one-half day for illness.  She touched the lives of many young people
through her years as an educator.  Maxine married Axel Pederson on July 27, 1939, at
the Christian Church parsonage, Cherokee, OK, with W.A. Keller as the minister.  To
this marriage, two sons were born, Perry and Roland.  They began their marriage living
in Alva, moving to a farm Northwest of Alva in 1948.  In 1956, they moved to a farm west
of Burlington, where they resided until Axel’s death July 26, 1989, one day short of
their fiftieth anniversary.  Maxine continued to live on the farm until 2001 when she
moved to Kiowa, KS.  In 2006, she moved to the Kiowa Manor in Kiowa where she lived
until her death.  In her ninety years, Maxine served in many capacities other than wife,
mother, grandmother, and teacher. She was charter member of the Driftwood Christian
Church, 4-H leader for 20 years, Sunday School teacher for 20 years, and served in the
nursery for 21 years. Maxine was recognized as the 1971 Alfalfa County Teacher of the
Year.  She was a member of the Oklahoma Educators Association, Woods County
Retired Teachers, ABBD Senior Citizens, Burlington FFA Mothers Club, Alva Advantage
Club, and other school and church related committees.  She enjoyed canning, quilting,
sewing, traveling, entertaining, and cooking for friends and relatives.  Maxine and Axel
made several trips to Axel’s native land of Denmark to visit many relatives.  Their trips
included a four month excursion in the winter of 1947-48 with their young son, Perry.
In 1962, they took both boys to visit the Danish family.  The couple returned in 1974 and
1980.  After Axel’s passing, Maxine took her sons and their families back to Denmark in
1991.

Maxine will be missed by her children; Perry and Theta Pederson, Ponca City, and
Roland and Terry Pederson, Burlington; grandchildren; Devan and Stacey Pederson
and their children, Charisa and Kendan, Julie Pederson of Oklahoma City, Kristy and
