| KIOWA- Maxine (Brady) Pederson went to be with her beloved Lord and Savior October 19, 2008. She was born to Ralph and Myrtle Brady April 28, 1918, east of Alva in the Ashley community. She started school at Short Springs and graduated from the eighth grade in 1930. She attended Alva High School, graduating in 1934. She was a student at Northwestern College until the spring of 1938 when she received her Bachelor of Science degree. Her teaching career began that fall at Elm Dale District #52, Woods County. She taught at several other schools, including Short Springs #42, (her home school), Franklin District, #104, Horace Mann, and Greenleaf. In 1956, Maxine began teaching at Amorita in Alfalfa County. Then, in 1957, she transferred to Burlington Schools for a twenty-three year tenure. She retired in 1980, after teaching 32 years, only missing one-half day for illness. She touched the lives of many young people through her years as an educator. Maxine married Axel Pederson on July 27, 1939, at the Christian Church parsonage, Cherokee, OK, with W.A. Keller as the minister. To this marriage, two sons were born, Perry and Roland. They began their marriage living in Alva, moving to a farm Northwest of Alva in 1948. In 1956, they moved to a farm west of Burlington, where they resided until Axel’s death July 26, 1989, one day short of their fiftieth anniversary. Maxine continued to live on the farm until 2001 when she moved to Kiowa, KS. In 2006, she moved to the Kiowa Manor in Kiowa where she lived until her death. In her ninety years, Maxine served in many capacities other than wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher. She was charter member of the Driftwood Christian Church, 4-H leader for 20 years, Sunday School teacher for 20 years, and served in the nursery for 21 years. Maxine was recognized as the 1971 Alfalfa County Teacher of the Year. She was a member of the Oklahoma Educators Association, Woods County Retired Teachers, ABBD Senior Citizens, Burlington FFA Mothers Club, Alva Advantage Club, and other school and church related committees. She enjoyed canning, quilting, sewing, traveling, entertaining, and cooking for friends and relatives. Maxine and Axel made several trips to Axel’s native land of Denmark to visit many relatives. Their trips included a four month excursion in the winter of 1947-48 with their young son, Perry. In 1962, they took both boys to visit the Danish family. The couple returned in 1974 and 1980. After Axel’s passing, Maxine took her sons and their families back to Denmark in 1991. Maxine will be missed by her children; Perry and Theta Pederson, Ponca City, and Roland and Terry Pederson, Burlington; grandchildren; Devan and Stacey Pederson and their children, Charisa and Kendan, Julie Pederson of Oklahoma City, Kristy and Cory Archuleta and their son, Kyden, Wamego, KS; and Toni Pederson, Burlington. She will also be missed by her sister, Mary Ellen Watkins, Kiowa, KS; two brothers, Ronald and Barbara Brady, Alva, and Larry and Nelda Brady, Hugoton, KS; and one sister-in- law, Mary Pedersen, Thisted, Denmark; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Axel; her parents, and two sisters, Vera Mae Smith and Gayle Jones. Funeral service will be Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Driftwood Christian Church with Pastor Dave Atzenweiler officiating. Burial will follow in the Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas.
