Dad & I would like to covey our Deepest Sympathy to you all. May the Peace of God be with you during
your time of sorrow. Doc will be missed very much. He was a very kind man. I do not remember a time
when he was not there for someone in need or at a reunion. I like to think we are all blessed to have

HARDTNER-Leland “Doc” Piersall died on February 2, 2008 at the age of 91  with his
wife, Gloria, his brother, Bill and niece and nephew; Rusty and Chonita
Sternberger by his side.  He was born to Bernell and Eunice McDowell Piersall on a
farm near Shattuck, Oklahoma on May 2, 1916.  He and his four sisters and three
brothers grew up during the days of the Dust Bowl.  In his teens he serving in the
CCC’s from 1935 to 1937, clearing land and building what is now Boiling Springs
State Park in Woodward, Oklahoma.  He joined the Army for 5 years in 1940 at the
age of 24 serving in the field artillery reaching the rank of staff sergeant.  After he
and Gloria Merritt were united in marriage in February of 1945 they moved from
Boston, Massachusetts to Hardtner, Kansas in 1946, where they have lived for 62
years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Jack and Teddy Keith and
two sisters; Eva Kathryn Bonham and Eileen Gwinner.   

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, one brother; Bill of Hardtner, Kansas, two
sisters; Treva Baker of Anthony, Kansas and Betty Lukens of Medicine Lodge,
Kansas, over fifty nephews and nieces and a host of friends.  

Funeral service will be Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the United
Methodist Church in Hardtner with Pastor Elizabeth Kirkwood officiating.  Burial
will follow in the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral
Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas.  

Memorials may be made to the Hardtner Public Library or the Methodist Church of
Hardtner through the funeral home.

Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 2008 from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
