KIOWA-William C. “Bill” Root passed away November 7, 2008 at the Kiowa Hospital
District Manor after a long battle with Parkinson’s.  Memorial service will be
Monday, November 10, 2008 at Driftwood Christian Church at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor
Dave Atzenweiler officiating. Private family burial will take place at Hardtner-
Elwood Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa,
Kansas.

Bill was born on February 22, 1935 to Fred M. and Marjorie Six Root on a farm near
Burton, Ks. in Cowley County.  The family moved back to the Union Chapel
neighborhood, southwest of Medicine Lodge.  Bill attended school at Hardtner,
until his senior year when he transferred to Medicine Lodge and graduated with
the class of 1953.  He attended Kansas State University and received a degree in
Agriculture.  After returning home from college, Bill joined his father on the farm
raising registered Hereford cattle.  His greatest joy was seeing that new whited-
faced baby calf.  Bill belonged to both the Barber County Hereford and Barber
Commanche Hereford Associations.  He was on the board that organized the
Barber County Cattleman’s Association.  During the 70’s, Bill joined the staff of the
Record Stockmen of Denver, Colorado, as a registered livestock reporter and
ringman.  He enjoyed meeting people in the livestock industry.  He met his wife,
Wanda Swenson, while at Kansas State.  They were married in the chapel of the
Presbyterian Church in Manhattan on May 29, 1959.  They were blessed with two
children; Connie and Mark.  Due to poor health, Bill and Wanda moved to Kiowa
where he became involved in Community Economic Development, starting the
Recycling Center.  Bill was a member of the Kiowa Lion’s Club and worked with
Dennis King to start a Christian Men’s Breakfast once a month.  As a real estate
agent and appraiser, he became a member of both the American and Kansas
Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.  Bill grew up attending Union
Chapel and accepted Christ during a revival.  He later joined the First Presbyterian
Church of Medicine Lodge.  He was active on the church board,as his father and
grandfather had been before him, and encouraged his children to know the Lord.
After moving to Kiowa, he started attending Bible Study and became involved with
the Kansas Navigators.  Bill became active at the Driftwood Christian Church
attending even when he had to come in his wheelchair.  He was one of the first
Promise Keepers.  He always enjoyed the church service at the Manor and seeing
his friends and Dave when Driftwood had the service.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill leaves his wife of 49 years, Wanda; a daughter, Connie Friend and husband,
Dean; a son, Mark Root and wife, Wendy; three granddaughters, Bridget and
husband, Jayden, Melissa and Emily Root; one great grandson, Collin Burmeister;
one sister, Marie Blythe; two nieces, Bonnie Thompson and husband, Wade and
family, Becky O’Loughlin and husband, Ryan and family; and two sisters in Christ,
Helen Holston and Lenora Yost.  He will be greatly missed by his family and many
friends.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Driftwood
Christian Church or Kansas State University Foundation Scholarship Animal
Science Dept. through the funeral home.

The casket will be open at the funeral home on Sunday, November 9, 2008 from 1:
