| HARDTNER-Robert A. Sternberger son of Jacob and Anna Frei Sternberger was born August 7, 1920 in Woods County, Oklahoma and departed this life on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Kiowa Hospital District Manor. Funeral service will be Friday, November 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Kiowa with Pastor Gib Clark officiating. Burial will be at the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Robert attended the first 8 years of school at the Franklin School Dist in Woods County. Then finished his education in the Hardtner Public School where he graduated with the class of 1939. On August 2, 1942, Robert enlisted in the United States Military and was stationed in Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. While stationed there he was united in marriage to Hazel Jones on February 12, 1943. He served 38 months in the service in which he spent 21 months in the European Theatre Operations. He participated in five different campaigns which included Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and the Ardennes. Robert was in the 634th Tank Destroyer Battalion and it was attached to the 1st Infantry division during the entire war in Europe. Robert returned home in October 1945, he and his wife, Hazel started farming in Woods County, Oklahoma. To this union one son Paul Leon Sternberger was born. In 1956 they moved two miles north into Barber County, Kansas and farmed until they retired in 1983. Most of their lives were spent in the Hardtner and Kiowa area. Robert was a member of the First Christian Church in Kiowa and also belonged to the V.F.W. Post in Kiowa. After returning home Robert was always interest in the welfare of the community and Barber County. He served 9 years on the Kiowa Township Board. He also served 28 years as Commissioner in Barber County in the 2nd District. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Pauline, Alice, Josephine, and Ruth and one brother, John. Robert is survived by his wife, Hazel of 65 years; one son, Paul Sternberger and life mate, Lia Turner of Trophy Club, Texas; one grandson, Jason and wife, Jackie of Clinton, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Julie Renae of Ada, Oklahoma; three great grandsons, Jace Evan, Jett William, and Jaxon Paul Sternberger, a host of relatives and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the McCall’s Chapel School in Ada, Oklahoma where Robert’s granddaughter lives, through the funeral home. The casket will be open at the funeral home on Thursday, November 5, 2008 from 9: 30a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30p.m. |
