| Jet-Funeral services for Harold Lee Tarrant, 79, will be at 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church of Jet on Saturday, April 5, 2008 with Rev. Carolyn Murrow officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery north of Jet with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee. Viewing will be Thursday from1:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. and Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. Harold Lee Tarrant was born on July 26, 1928 on the family farm southeast of Jet to Lawence and Josephine Tarrant and died on March 31, 2008 at Great Plains Care Center in Helena. He attended the Jet Public Schools, graduating from Jet High School in 1946. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Oklahoma A & M College in 1950. While attending college, Harold was a four-year member of the varsity track team and was elected team captain in 1949-1950. He held records in the half mile races and anchored several relay teams, including the mile, the two mile and the sprint medley relay races. On Sept 10, 1949 he and Elsie Blackledge were married in the Jet Methodist Church. They are parents of five children. Harold worked in sales for eight years in Tulsa, Muskogee and Oklahoma City before returning to Alfalfa County to farm in 1958. He also worked on a construction crew which built wheat elevators in Nash, Carrier, Drummond and Okarche. Harold served in the community as a director on the Co-op elevator board, the Jet-Nash School Board and the Methodist Church Administrative Council. He also was a member of the Alfalfa Electric Co-op Board of Trustees for ten years. Harold worked to bring a rural water system to farms south of Jet. Harold enjoyed the freedom of the farm and kept his love of sports throughout his active life. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; two sons, Doug Tarrant and wife, Jean of Cypress, Texas and Lee Tarrant and wife, Ellen of Stillwater; three daughters, Karen Morris and husband, Ken of Okmulgee, Sara Chain and husband, Dale of Hunter and Susan Burchfiel and husband, Bill of Jet; sixteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren and two sisters, Wilma O’Quinn and husband, Ross of Enid and June Weston of Red Hook, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorene and Betty and one brother, Eldon. Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the Lions Club of Jet through the funeral home. |
