| Mildred Evelyn Moran Farney, daughter of George and Blanche Moran was born on December 21, 1919 in Meade, Kansas. She went to be with her Savior on May 2, 2009 at the age of 89 years, 4 months, 12 days. Funeral service will be Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Kiowa. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10-7 with the family present from 5-7. Memorials may be made to the church through the funeral home. Mildred was raised on a farm near Meade, Kansas with her 9 siblings. At the age of 8 her mother died and she and her siblings were placed in the Wichita Children’s Home. Shortly after, Mildred went to live with Pete and Marie Farney and her two foster brothers, Max and Richard Guthrie. She graduated from Kiowa High School in 1937. Life on the farm kept everyone busy, especially during the threshing season. She learned her cooking skills during this time and became an excellent cook. She also fell in love with the foreman of one of the threshing crews, Ulysses Farney, and they were married on March 7, 1939. To this union three children were born. Soon after their marriage, Ulysses and Mildred made the most important decision of their lives, when the confessed Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and became members of the Apostolic Christian Church. She faithfully served as kitchen coordinator for many years and knew exactly how much food to prepare for the various dinners. As a young woman and mother, she had many interests. She worked hard helping with the finances of her family by taking in ironing and she became well known for her delicious cinnamon rolls. She was also very proficient in making her own soap which she used for washing laundry. She loved to quilt and made quilts for each of her children and a graduation quilt for each of her seven granddaughters which are cherished by each one of them. In addition to these daily activities, Mildred also found time to read. An avid reader, she even shared her books with others. In 1953, the family moved to a farm northwest of Kiowa. She learned about pigs and cattle with Ulysses and was very good at choosing quality livestock. Another skill she developed was to become an excellent truck driver during wheat harvest. Her husband and son depended on her and she taught her granddaughter to drive when she retired. She also became involved with 4-Hand worked with her three children and their projects. Mildred was active in her community and was a member of the Busy-Bee Club, Kiowa Gardening Club, and in the later part of her life, Borderline Theatre. She helped with making costumes and she served on the board for many years. She was a natural born artist, and after only a few lessons she was painting beautiful pictures. One of her last joys was going on the Farney family reunion cruise in 2007. She enjoyed her family and only missed one Farney family reunion. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Ulysses; daughter, Diane; son, John; son-in-law, Rex Miner, five brothers, three sisters, and two foster brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen of Kiowa, daughter-in-law, Sheryl K. Farney of Kiowa, granddaughter, Kimberly and Stephen Gugelmeyer and children; Naicee, Neal, and Nora, granddaughter, Krista and John Dawson and children; Sophia and Ian, granddaughter, Jenny and Matt Cantrell and children; Grant, Gage, Grace and Garen, granddaughter, Komari and Rick Aberle and children; Mara and Krae, granddaughter, April and Cody Lawson, granddaughter Megan and Craig Rucker and child, Kayla, granddaughter Rachel and Jared Rippy, former sons-in-law, Lowell Stucky and Sammy Neal, and a host of relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. |
