Durwood Floyd Goforth, lifelong resident of Okeene and Homestead, lost his long
struggle for life and passed away at the Okeene Municipal Hospital on Wednesday,
March 4th.

Durwood was born in Okeene in the home of his parents, Henry Floyd Goforth and
Bertie Elma Walker, on May 6, 1927.  He was the sixth of nine children. Durwood
attended school at both Homestead and Okeene.  He graduated with the Okeene
High School, Class of 1945. Durwood enlisted in the Army in Sept. 1945.  After
completing basic training, he was assigned to the Army Air Corps and was
stationed at Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas.  Later he was transferred to the
Army Air Force 785th Division stationed at Natal AFB in Natal, Brazil. After his
discharge, Durwood worked at Goforth Motor Co. and Goforth Equipment Co.,
where he was a salesman, radio/TV repairman, serviced home appliances, and
installed home air conditioning.  He later became part owner of the Goforth
Equipment Co. On October 10, 1948, Durwood and Betty Lou Westfahl were married
at Alfalfa, OK by Rev. Hessel, a former Homestead minister.  In 1951, they bought a
house on Main Street across from the school where they raised two sons and a
daughter. In 1960, Durwood joined the Okeene Volunteer Fire Dept.  In 1963,
Durwood was recognized by Okeene for “Heroism above and beyond the call of
duty in saving a human life”.   He served as an Okeene fireman for 20 years.
Durwood assisted in constructing the Okeene Golf Course.  He instantly came to
love playing the game, participating in many of the local golf tournaments.
In 1975, Durwood began working for Arkla as a serviceman.  He retired from Arkla
in 1990, but he continued to farm land at Homestead that had been owned by his
family.

Durwood is survived by Betty, his wife of 60 years; also by their three children:
Ronald Goforth and wife Kay of Houston, TX; Donald Goforth and wife Toni of
Okeene; Sandra Roever and husband Joe of Okeene.  Additional survivors include
two brothers, Jerry Goforth of Miami, OK, and Gayle Goforth of Perry, OK; five
grandchildren, Brandi Garrison, Stephanie Caldwell, Daniel Goforth, Daniel
Roever, and Ashley Roever; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb Garrison, Kathryn
Garrison, Reagan Caldwell, and William Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Elvin, Jack, Billy, Duane,
