| Hot Springs, Arkansas-Funeral service for Dean Hachenberg, 85, will be Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 9:00 A.M. at the Goltry Congregational UCC with Rev. Joel Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Karoma Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. in Helena. Viewing will be Wednesday from 1:00 P. M. until 8:00 P.M. and before the service at the church. Dean was born on June 9, 1924 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Lester Hachenberg and Annie Reily Hachenberg and passed from this life on June 13, 2009 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Dean married Florene Pekrul on November 23, 1949 in the Goltry Congregational Church and celebrated 59 years of marriage. He was a veteran of twelve campaigns during World War II. His military awards included the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal and eight stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal and one star, a Navy United Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory World War II Medal. He participated in action at Kiska, Tarawa, Kwajalein Atoll, Eniwetok Atoll, Kavieng, Saipan, Tinian, Angaur Island, Iwo Jima and Leyte Island. His ship, the USS Tennessee (BB43), took fire from shore batteries and numerous air attacks including a direct hit by a Japanese suicide plane. He participated in the night Battle of Surigao Straits, which was the last time in naval history that major surface combatants (battleships) directly fought each other. This man lived the history that the rest of us can only ask or read about. After being honorably discharged he returned to civilian life and earned a masters degree in school administration with an undergraduate degree in math. He not only rose to become a school superintendent, and later became a petroleum engineer. He and Florene lived in various places in western Oklahoma and southwestern Kanas: Liberal for 13 years, Olatha for 11 years, Augusta, Kansas for 15 years, then to Hot Springs to live near their daughter for 7 years. Dean taught in Bishop, Ft. Supply and Cherokee Oklahoma Schools and Ingalls and Kismet Kansas Schools. He loved trailering, was a ham radio operator, was a KCCH Mason and a Shriner at the Wichita Temple. Dean was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. Survivors include his wife, Florene of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Bruce, Donita and Andrea Balfour of Royal, Arkansas. Those who preceded Dean in death include his parents and one brother, Derald. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or the charily of the donor’s choice through the funeral home. |
