| KIOWA-Frankie Dean Shipley passed away on December 18, 2009 at his home in Kiowa, Kansas after a year of battling terminal cancer. Funeral service will be Monday, December 21, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Lanman Funeral Home Chapel located at 204 N. 7th St., Kiowa, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery in Hardtner, Kansas. Viewing is Sunday December 20, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. and before the service on Monday from 9 to11 a.m. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Condolences may be shared with the family at www. lanmanmemorials.com. Frank was born in Alva, Oklahoma on February 29, 1932 to Ether Eldridge Shipley and Lillie Mae Rhoades. He married Billie Marlene Pippin on May 7, 1955 at Newton, Kansas into which marriage four sons and three daughters were born and raised in the Alva, Oklahoma/Kiowa, Kansas area. He currently has seven children, 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren with two more great grandchildren on the way. Frank grew up in the Alva area along with his 12 brothers and sisters. He always enjoyed being outdoors riding horses and working with his hands. As a teenager he enjoyed participating in rodeos and as a young adult, playing his guitar for all who would listen. When Frank and Billie were first married, Frank worked on a construction crew, building a grain elevator in Salina, Kansas. Shortly thereafter, he went to work on a farm east of Harper, Kansas. When his employment ended there, he went on to work at the Rialto Theatre in Alva, Oklahoma and remained there for several years. He also worked as a janitor part time during the time his children were growing up at Holder Drug in Alva, Oklahoma. For the most part of his life he worked as a mason contractor and had constructed several buildings of significance in the Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Colorado and Kentucky areas. To name a few: the Bell tower at Longfellow School in Alva, Oklahoma, the arches leading into the Martina McBride Park in Sharon, Kansas, the Austin College Library in Sherman, Texas, the First National Bank of Waynoka, Oklahoma, the Central National Bank in Alva, Oklahoma, the Farmers Exchange Bank in Cherokee, Oklahoma, as well as the dance hall that Garth Brooks started his music career in at Stillwater, Oklahoma. He also built countless private homes and businesses throughout the country. He was a wonderful husband, a loving father and a kind and gentle grandfather and great-grandfather. He carried his religion deep within his heart and enjoyed sharing his religious beliefs with all the many people that he came in contact with. He had a deep love for his family which motivated him to work hard all of his life. One of the things he enjoyed was to go horseback riding as often as he possibly could. He raised several horses throughout his lifetime. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Ether Eldridge and Lillie Mae Shipley; full brothers, Junior Eldridge Shipley, Charles Elmer Shipley; full sister, Bonnie Jean Ford; half-brother, Albert Eldridge Shipley; half-sisters, Lena Rose Wing, Ada Mae Rawson and Opal Elizabeth Wing. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Billie Marlene Shipley of Kiowa, Kansas; his children, Hershel Eldridge Shipley and wife, Leota of Independence, Kentucky, Kenneth Dwayne Shipley of Independence, Kentucky, Nancy Lynn Fowler and husband, Rick of Roanoke, Virginia, Russell Dean Shipley and wife, Nancy of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Antonia (Toni) De Ann Shipley and husband, Brian of Glenpool, Oklahoma, Vikki Mae Long and husband, Kenneth of Sharon, Kansas and Lance Allen Shipley of Kiowa, Kansas; full brothers and sisters, Marvin E. Shipley, Jimmy Dale Shipley, Sterling Price Shipley and Mattie Sue Morgan; half-brother, Raymond Oliver Shipley; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way. Frank will truly be missed by all who came in contact with him as well as those who shared so much of his life with him. May he rest in peace.
