KIOWA-Richard  Wenzel,57, passed away on October 29, 2009 in Wichita at the
Harry Hynes Unit.  Funeral service will be Monday, November 2, 2009 at 10:00a.m.
at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Medicine Lodge with Pastor Dennis Fangmeyer
officiating.  Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements
are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas.  Condolences may be shared

Richard Max Wenzel was born in Alva, Oklahoma on March 26, 1952 to Erich Wenzel
and Dora Terwort Wenzel.  He graduated from high school in Sharon, Kansas in
1970 and attended one year at Wichita Vo-Tech.  For several years he helped his
family on their dairy farm in Sharon, Kansas until he moved to Kiowa, Kansas.  
While in Kiowa he worked for Humphrey’s for a few years and also worked for the
Kiowa Police Department.  He then went to work for Carl Eckert Harvesting for
several years.  Richard moved to Garden City, Kansas and worked for Ball
Trucking.  He married Carol Kowalke-Gashler on July 2, 1982.  The couple moved
back to Kiowa, Kansas where he continued to work for several different trucking
companies until his illness in February 2009 when he could no longer work.  
Richard enjoyed spending time with his family.   One of his favorite activities was
to take his grandsons fishing.  He enjoyed the time he could spend with his son
fixing things.  And he also enjoyed reading his daughter’s latest poetry as well as
working in his yard and garden.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Doug Gashler and wife, Kim of Derby;
daughter, Heather Gashler-Gilbert and husband, Ronmel of Salina, Kansas; four
grandchildren, Trenton, DeCoda, Alexus and Bo Gashler; three sisters, Betty
Benson and husband, Bill of Manchester, Oklahoma, Bonnie Fischer and husband,
Norman of Sharon, Kansas, Connie Boggs and husband, John; several aunts,
uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Trinity Lutheran Church or
Harry Hynes Hospice through the funeral home.  

Visitation will be Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the
family present from 5-7 to receive friends.
