BURLINGTON-Leota Isabelle Cloyd passed away at the age of 93 years 10 months 14 days at the Kiowa District Hospital on Saturday, January 07, 2012. Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Driftwood Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Ks. Visitation will be Monday, January 9,2012 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Riverside Cemetery or the Burlington Education Foundation and sent to the funeral home.
Leota was born on February 24, 1918 in Alfalfa county, in the Burlington area, to Kelsey Glee Crowl, Sr. and Elizabeth Isabelle Chew Crowl. She was the fifth of eight children. She went to school at the age of seven in Delta, Utah then moved to Oklahoma and attended the Harmony School to the eighth grade and graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1937. She worked at home after graduation helping her mother. On October 10, 1937 Leota and Wayne Cloyd were united in marriage at Pawhuska, Oklahoma and to this union three children were born; Buford, Avis and Margaret. Leota and Wayne moved to Alva in 1938 and ran a gas station and a coffee shop. In 1939 they made their home in the Burlington area. Leota worked as a nurse aide at Cherokee, Oklahoma,Hardtner, Kansas, and Kiowa, Kansas. She went to cosmetology school and owned her own beauty shop. She was a charter member of the Driftwood Christian Church, she taught the junior Sunday school class for 26 years, she was a member of the Riverside Quilting club, Burlington Lucky 13 Club, FFA Mother’s Club. She lived in her present home for 61 years in Burlington, moving to the Kiowa Manor exactly one month to the day of her death.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; six brothers, Eugene, Kenneth, Kelsey, Jr., Harold, Delbert, Harley Dean; one sister, Waneta Hall; one great grandson, Larmie Barton.
She is survived by her three children; Buford and wife, Darlene of Kiowa, Avis and husband, Kirk Johnson of Kiowa, Margaret and husband, Dennis Hatlestad of Burlington, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Kendra (Pat) Stacey, Ken (Penny) Emmele Tammy Isabelle Stacey, Travis (Deeon) Barton, Tonya (Jerry) Brown, Dwayne (Kristie) Hatlestad , Stephanie (Shane) Miller, thirteen great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Everett (Virginia) Cloyd, Earl Cloyd; six sisters-in-law, Nadine Crowl, Edith Deschner, Fern Crowl, Mary Alice Gillum, Marie Cloyd, and Peggy Cloyd.
