Alvin Wilcox

Funeral service for Alvin Wilcox of Enid, formerly Cleo Springs, will be Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Elm Flat Christian Church with Len Coulter and Roy Wahlgren officiating.  Burial will be in Aline Star Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Helena.  Friends may come to the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. for visitation.

Alvin Wilcox was born to parents Thomas and Hazel Davidson Wilcox on December 5, 1913 in a home north of Aline built by his grandfather, Nathan Worley and Mr. Worley’s son-in-law. He departed this life in Enid on Friday, January 27, 2012.  He went to grade school at Elm Flat and then went to high school in Cleo Springs.  Alvin and Mattie Harmon were married in Carmen in 1947 and made their home in Cleo Springs.  From an early age, Alvin farmed, harvested grain and, in partnership with his father, raised thoroughbred horses which his father trained.  The horses were raced in various tracks in New Mexico and in Nebraska.  Alvin was a member of Elm Flat Christian Church and served in many capacities to keep his church going.  He was chairman of the church board and treasurer for many years.  He drew the blueprints used to build the current church building.  Alvin also served on Cleo Springs town board for many years.  His horse, Old Blue, was important to him and was ridden by many nieces and nephews.  Alvin’s favorite job was keeping all those nieces and nephews in line.  Alvin lost his leg when he was six years old, due to an infection, and spent six months in the hospital.  He started farming when he was nine, before receiving a prosthesis, and drove a team of mules pulling a ridge buster following his brother.  He said, ”I didn’t have to work, I wanted to."

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, Leonard and Dan; four sisters, Ella Frances, Zirtha, Emma and Ethlyn.

Those remaining to cherish Alvin’s memory are his wife, Mattie; two brothers-in-law, Bobbie Harmon and wife, Peggy and Buddie Harmon and wife, Joann; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to Elm Flat Christian Church for Missions through the funeral home.

Mattie, you and Alvin were  such good friends to my mother.  I really appreciate what you did for her.  Alvin was always so kind and thoughtful, and both of you have been a blessing to the Cleo community.  Alvin will surely be missed by all that knew him.
