Burial will follow at the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lanmanmemorials.com Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-7 pm with the family present from 5-7 to receive friends. Hazel M. Jones Sternberger went to be with her heavenly father and her loving husband, Robert on Sunday, April 18. She passed peacefully from this life at her home surrounded by family and loved ones. Hazel was the daughter of Bert and Edna Jenkins Jones and was born on January 2, 1918 in Woods County, Oklahoma. She was one of eleven children and grew to adulthood on her family’s farm. It was from this upbringing that she learned the gift of appreciation of all things, both great and small. She attended all of her school years in Hardtner, Kansas where she graduated with the class of 1936. She met her husband, Robert while attending school and they were united in marriage in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1943 prior to his deployment to Europe during WWII. This was the start of a union that would last 65 precious years. To this union one son, Paul Leon Sternberger was born. While Robert was in the service, Hazel spent her time with her parents and helped them with their farming interests. When Robert returned home in October of 1945, they started farming in Woods County, Oklahoma. While Robert was farming, Hazel was busy doing the things she loved to do. She found great pride in being a mother, wife, housekeeper, caretaker and in later years a grandmother and great-grandmother. She always had some type of baking or cooking going on in her kitchen, but was never too busy to drop what she was doing and help Robert with some unexpected task that would come up on the farm. She was always there to help him with farm duties for the next 38 years until they chose to retire from farming in 1983. In 1956 they moved two miles north of where they were living in Woods County and built their dream home. They lived there and enjoyed their home together until Robert’s death in 2008. In November of 2008, Hazel moved to Texas to live with her son Paul. Although she missed her home of 52 years she left behind, she readily made new friends in her new surroundings with her sweet disposition and beautiful smile. She loved to sit out on the patio on nice days and watch the birds and squirrels and share some of her favorite memories from her life. She also took painting classes, did scrapbooking and enjoyed playing cards. During this time, she was facing overwhelming health challenges, but as always she faced her adversity with a great amount of faith, courage, dignity, and grace. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kiowa since 1961 and always gave freely of her time to the church. She loved to be part of the ladies group at the church, and gave countless hours of her time to help put on church dinners. Her tireless dedication and work gave her a deep sense of helping the church flourish. She was preceded in death by her parents; Bert and Edna Jones, her husband, Robert; six brothers, Paul Ray, Carl, Wesley, Lester and Aymer Jones; four sisters, Marie, Ruth, Gladys and Virgie. Hazel is survived by a son; Paul Sternberger and wife, Lia of Trophy Club, Texas; grandson, Jason Sternberger and wife, Jackie of Clinton, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Julie Sternberger of Ada, Oklahoma; three great-grandsons, Jace Evan, Jett William and Jaxon Paul Sternberger, all of Clinton, Oklahoma; two special caregivers, Janet Thompson of Keller, Texas and Libby Sanders of Crowley, Texas, other relatives and a host of friends. She was well respected and loved in the community, and will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to McCall’s Chapel School or the First Christian Church women’s group through the funeral home. |
