Melody Lynn Smith was born on June 6, 1953 to Eldon and Mavis (Rainey) Smith in Enid, OK. She passed away on November 29, 2018 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in OKC.  The only girl out of five siblings, Melody always had a positive personality and a giving spirit. She graduated from Southeast High School in Oklahoma City and also attended Beauty College. She married Larry McNeill and they had two sons together, Larry George and Garry Eldon. Before and after her divorce, Melody worked long, hard hours to provide for her and the boys. At times, she held down three jobs, including her full-time job as a civilian contractor at Vance Air Force Base.  She retired from that work on November 16, 2018.

Melody loved her children and grandchildren fiercely. While holding down multiple jobs, she still managed to be involved with both sets of grandkids, whether it meant driving four hours to Durant to watch them or driving across town to see hundreds of ball games. She loved them all faithfully and equally.

She loved all things Elvis Presley, casinos and her Vegas girls. She loved plants and flowers and always kept a well-manicured lawn, even as a single mom, but she also loved to work.  She took pride in giving her employers the best effort possible and she expected that from people around her. But most importantly, Melody loved the Lord. She made sure her sons were in church and were taught to follow God. She faithfully attended Enid Bible Church for many years. Most recently, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherokee, OK.

She was a very hospitable person, well-known for inviting people she hardly knew into her home for holiday gatherings and events. But those invitees didn’t stay strangers for long because Melody made sure they felt welcomed. Thanksgiving was the big holiday of the year for her. She made the absolute best dressing in the world to go along with her homemade noodles while hosting upwards of 40 people each year.

Melody was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Mavis Smith.

She is survived by two sons, Larry McNeill and wife, Kendyll of Enid, Oklahoma and Garry McNeill and wife, Heather of Cherokee, Oklahoma; four brothers, Joe Smith and his late wife, Susan of Covington, Oklahoma, John Smith and wife, Patty of Norman, Oklahoma, Jerry Smith and wife, Kazumi of Celina, Texas and Jeff Smith and wife, Linda of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Gage and Lexi McNeill of Enid, Oklahoma and Haley, Reeselyn, Brynlee and Garrison McNeill of Cherokee, Oklahoma; longtime companion, Earl Whitley of Enid, Oklahoma and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Memorials may be made the First Baptist Church of Cherokee through the funeral home.
